1. WILLIAM SETH4 MONINGER (JOHN3, GEORGE2, JOHN1) was born 18 April 1861 in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and died 21 August 1940 in Burwell, Garfield County, Nebraska. He married ELLA JANE BROWN 15
October 1883 in Fremont, Nebraska, daughter of NELSON BROWN and ANNA JONES. She was born 05 March 1865 in Tekamah, Nebraska, and died 05 May 1950 in Taylor, Loup County, Nebraska.

Notes for WILLIAM SETH MONINGER
William Seth Moninger, son of John and Mary Moninger, was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania. His parents died when he was a small child and he was raised by John and Elizabeth Emerick in Omaha, Nebraska. He was probably about six years old when his mother died. He came to Nebraska with his parents in 1865, two years before the state was admitted to statehood, making the entire trip from Pennsylvania to Omaha by steamboat.
In 1883, William Moninger and Ella Jane Brown were married at Fremont, Nebraska. The following February they moved to the newly organized Loup County in a covered wagon. They lived at Kent, while Mr. Moninger helped build the Kent bridge, the first in the county. When the bridge was completed, they crossed the North Loup River and the covered wagon followed the winding trail up the valley and they camped on the Moninger ranch, two miles northwest of the Abbott bridge. The covered wagon served as a shelter until a soddy could be constructed on the homestead.
Twelve children were born.
Two died in infancy. Lola is buried on the ranch and Seth near Waterloo, Nebraska.

Pearl married Jacob Henry Roblyer and lived in Loup County 91 years. They had three daughters.
John married Luella Fales and lived on a Kinkaid homestead. They had eleven children.
Orville married Frances Taylor. He served in World War I, then became a carpenter and lived in Omaha. They had two sons.
Annie married Roy Austin. They lived in Loup County 51 years before moving to Garfield County. They had one son.
Faye married Wesley Smith and had five children.
Fern married Francis Hoobler and had three sons.
Laura married Paul Myers and had one son.
Lila married Dewey Larsen. They had five children.
George married Luella Sinner and they had seven children.
Fred married Wilda Gumb. They had four children.

William raised corn and wheat which he took to Burwell to the grist mill. He cut cedar posts which he took to Grand Island and exchanged for groceries and other necessities. Pearl told how he always brought home some oranges so each child's stocking had an orange at Christmas. He trained his team to go down the road while he hunted wild game.
Came the drought years of the 1890s with crop failure and disaster, William helped organize the Newton Irrigation Company in November 1894. He served as Sheriff of Loup County from 1892 until 1896. From 1917 until 1926 he was County Treasurer. He built a house in Taylor. He was treasurer of his local school for thirty years, assessor and precinct assessor for many years. In 1927 he returned to his ranch with his wife and two sons,
George and Fred.
When Elizabeth Emerick passed away William and Ella moved to the Rooming House in Burwell where they lived until their deaths.

Notes for ROYAL ALFRED AUSTIN:
Royal Alfred Austin, better known as Roy, was born on his father's homestead in southwest Loup County on October 4, 1887. While he was quite young his parents, Luren and Emma Hargan Austin, moved to a new home northwest of Almeria. Since the new home was about midway between the Dry Valley, Knobby Ridge and Liberty school districts, Roy attended all three schools as terms of school were offered. When he had completed his schooling Roy worked and farmed for himself in the area.
On May 1, 1912 Roy and Annie Moninger were married at Broken Bow. They returned to their home the following day where they made their home for the next twenty-five years. Their only son, Stanley, was born December 6, 1916. He attended grade school in the Liberty and Dry Valley schools and high school at Taylor
High School. Stanley served in the Army Air Corps in World War Two. He married Nelva Walker.
In 1937, Roy and Annie moved to Minnesota where they were employed for several months. They soon moved back to Loup County for a short time, then purchased a rooming house in Burwell which they operated for many years. When the new hospital was built in Burwell, Roy was employed as maintenance man, a position that he kept for more than seventeen years. Much of this time Annie was in charge of the hospital kitchen. Roy and Annie made a home for their grandsons, Gary and Gaylen Austin, for several years while they attended the Burwell schools.
Annie passed away in 1968 while at work at the hospital. Roy lived alone and continued to be active in the community and church. In 1986 he passed away at his home at the age of 98 and one-half years. Roy and Annie are both at rest in the Moulton Cemetery.

Stanley was born on his parents' farm in the Dry Valley area of Loup County, Nebraska on December 6, 1916. He married Nelva Walker in Loup City, Nebraska on May 31, 1941. After they were married they lived a few months with Glen Walker, Nelva's father, and his family near Kent in Loup County. The fall of 1941 Stan and Nelva moved to Morrill, Nebraska and both worked in the Chester B. Brown Beanery until March 1942.
Stan joined the Army Air Corps on April 2, 1942 and left from Taylor, Nebraska to do his patriotic duty in World War II. Nelva lived with her folks on the farm where their first son, Gary, was born July 3, 1942. When Gary was 4 1/2 months old Nelva took a train to Boise, Idaho were Stan was stationed undergoing military training. They all left Boise in November 1942 and went to Rapid City, South Dakota where Stan trained until May. On May 29, 1943 Nelva returned to her folks in Nebraska and Stan went on to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. From Fort Leavenworth Stan was immediately sent to North Africa where he was a B-17 crewmember flying
missions over Italy. Their second son, Gaylen, was born at Nelva's parents' home on September 16, 1943.
On his 25th mission on October 5, 1943, Stan's plane, RHOMAR II, was shot down over Bologna, Italy. With the help of local Italians sympathetic to the Americans, he was able to evade the Germans for seven weeks.
He was captured by the Germans on Thanksgiving Day, 1943, and was marched to Stalag 17 in Germany where he spent over 16 months in captivity. After he was repatriated, he received his honorable discharge from the
Army Air Corps as a Technical Seargent on October 25, 1945 at Fort Leavenworth.

In 1957 he sold the business to Bernard and the family moved to a sheep and barley ranch near Orland, California. After eleven months Stan and Nelva moved to
Willows, California. Gary and Gaylen returned to Burwell in 1958 and lived with Stan's parents, Roy and Annie Austin, to finish high school.
While in Willows, Stan worked in housing construction in Chico, California for two years. After that he was hired by Glenn County Schools as an audio-visual technician where he worked until he retired in 1982. In 1966
Stan and Nelva moved just north of Orland.
Having never spent a day in the hospital his entire life, Stan suffered from emphysema in later years. In January 1985 he contracted pneumonia and died in a Chico hospital on January 21, 1985 after 13 days in the intensive care unit. His remains were returned to Moulton Cemetery in Nebraska near where he was born.
Nelva continued to live on their place near Orland until 1994 when she returned to Burwell and moved into Roy and Annie's home which was built in 1954.
